Great Goddess of the sacred Isle of Avalon

Lady of Avalon I

Hand-built ceramic

The Lady of Avalon is an embodiment of the Great Goddess and the divine feminine in Celtic pagan spirituality. According to Kathy Jones, priestess of the Goddess and co-founder of the Glastonbury Goddess Temple, the Lady of Avalon is an ancient and powerful goddess, bound to the sacred Isle of Avalon and to Glastonbury in England. RHEAsilvia made this Lady of Avalon for the Goddess Temple.

The Lady of Avalon according to Kathy Jones

  • Nolava of the Sacred Land: Kathy Jones describes her as Nolava of the sacred ground, a goddess of compassion, healing and transformation. She holds up the mirror of change and leads people to reflect on themselves.
  • The landscape of Glastonbury: The landscape around Glastonbury is the physical and energetic body of the goddess, a swan-shaped temple and an Otherworld paradise.
  • Myths and forms: She appears in the myths of the sisterhood of the Nine Morgens, among them Morgen la Fey, and as the Maiden Bridie, goddess of healing, poetry and smithcraft.
  • The land and the springs: The Lady of Avalon embodies nature itself: the green hills, the fire, the air and the sacred springs and wells that rise from her body and nourish the land.

The four faces of the goddess

Kathy Jones experiences and teaches the goddess in the landscape of Glastonbury in four archetypal forms of change:

  • Maiden: New beginnings, youth and freshness.
  • Lover: Sensuality, connection and the white mare Rhiannon, who rides over the hills.
  • Mother: The Great Mother Modron as the source of life and of creative birth.
  • Crone: Age, the cauldron of transformation and the cycles of death and rebirth.
